GWA free trial of Garden, Landscape & Horticulture Index
Hi all,
GWA has a one-month free trial of bibliographic databases Garden, Landscape & Horticulture Index (GLHI) and Environment Complete produced by EBSCO Publishing. See below for details.
There is a description of EP's databases, reviews by Library Journal, and downloadable lists of the titles included with dates of coverage at www.ebscohost.com (Click on Colleges & Universities, and scroll down to Garden, Landscape & Horticulture Index, or Environment Complete).
I urge you to take advantage of GWA's free trial and pass on your comments to GWA and EBSCO Publishing. You can get the password from GWA or request a free trial at www.ebscohost.com
At the moment the GLHI database includes bibliographic data and abstracts (with links to full text if you are using it in a library that subscribes to other EBSCO Publishing databases). A full-text version is in development (Publishers, license your titles now!)
Full disclosure: I am no longer the Editor of GLHI or Environment Complete. The new editor is Heather McDonough hmcdonough@epnet.com
I recently retired and moved to the great state of Maine. My new email address is gardenlit@gmail.com. I would love to hear from any of you.

Subject: GWA Research Database Announcement
MEMORANDUM
TO: GWA Members
FROM: Web Advisory Task Force
RE: Trial Evaluation of New Database Research Tool
In an effort to expand membership benefits and increase Web-based services,
the Web Advisory Task Force proposes to offer GWA members use of the Garden,
Landscape & Horticulture Index ™ (GLHI), the premier resource for access to
article abstracts about gardens and plants (see description below).
Database Description: Garden, Landscape & Horticulture Index™ (GLHI)
Garden, Landscape & Horticulture Index™ is the premier resource for access
to articles about gardens and plants. Topics include horticulture, botany,
garden and landscape design & history, ecology, plant and garden
conservation, garden management, and horticultural therapy. A highlight of
the database is its focus on environmentally sustainable horticultural and
design practices. This index and abstract product is designed for gardening
enthusiasts, professionals, and students of horticulture and of garden and
landscape design & history. Garden, Landscape & Horticulture Index covers a
wide range of serial titles including general gardening titles of national,
international, and regional interest, and titles devoted to specialty
gardens and plant groups. Indexed and abstracted are more than 350 core
titles, the majority of which are published in English. Coverage for many
titles extends back further than a decade. Garden, Landscape & Horticulture
Index is a unique resource that brings together articles about plants and
gardens into a single source, and it includes titles that are not available
in any other index.
The GLHI is currently offered only to institutional subscribers such as
corporations, schools and libraries. Subscription costs vary and GWA's cost
would be approximately $4,000 the first year and ranging up to $7,700 in
year three. Therefore, the Task Force and Board of Directors seek member
input before committing to a full subscription.
With the help of the GLHI publisher, EBSCO, we have arranged a 30-day trial
use period. From now to mid November, GWA members will have free access to
the GLHI to see how it can help you with your writing projects. In November,
the Task Force will survey all members to evaluate the database usefulness
and recommend to the Board whether to invest in an EBSCO subscription.
[password removed]
Once you enter the database trial area, you will see two (2) database
listings. One is for the Garden, Landscape & Horticulture Index database
which provides bibliographic listings and brief abstracts. The second
listing is the Environment Complete (EC) database. The EC database is
included in the trial for a comparison between an abstracted database (GLHI)
and a full-text database (EC).
Use the GLHI database as often as possible so you have a familiarity with
how it works and what it can produce. Compare the results to the EC database
and its full-text feature. Then, be ready to offer your comments in the
November survey.
It is possible the cost of this service may have a small impact on member
dues; so, maximum participation in the trial period and evaluation survey is
encouraged for all GWA members.
