Re: Digital video camera

Jeff - as a second note to the video issue - I note your camera is only
half the battle. When I purchased my new one to replace the old, I
"discovered" a few little glitches along the way. ;-) Frankly, I wasn't
anticipating these problems.

The new camera's output was mpeg-4 - a serious change from the 3 year
old model I was using (output in mpeg)

And while I was quite happily running a blazing fast Linux machine for
all my other work (including photographs) Linux doesn't yet have an
outstanding video editing suite. I was doing my editing on the dark
side of my computer (MS) and playing a bit with an old Mac. Both are
relatively slow older machines (mine) without masses of ram and with
slower processors.

So I needed new software to handle the mpeg-4. But the new software
wouldn't load on this old machine of mine. I was out by a few
generations of speed (and my computer is 4 years old) So I needed a new
computer to handle the new software to handle the new camera.

Instead, I've found a utility that changes the new format video to old
format video. Now, I'm stumbling along with the old software on the MS
side and trying to learn how to run an emulator in Linux to run updated
software on the good-guy side of my system.

And deciding to suck it up and purchase a new computer in the spring
with all the whiz-bang editing software I'll need for the next 2-3
years.

Again, it will be a dual boot system so I can run my Linux software -
but have something that will handle the higher system requirements of
the Mac or Win systems - and video production over there. (until Linux
video editors mature of course) :-)

That's the long way of saying there's more to video than the camera if
you're going to do it properly. Do investigate the entire chain of
production - from camera to software to hardware before you invest some
bucks in a camera. And I haven't even got to lighting yet. :-)

Best

Doug
