Hi Doug,

If you can, I strongly recommend using vmware or xen on your system
instead of dual-booting (vmware is a lot easier to use, though).

Basically, this lets you run Windows or any other Intel-based operating
system in a window running on your machine. If you're a Windows user
you could try out Linux in a virtual machine (VM) without having to
reinstall the operating system. If you're a Linux user, you could run
   Windows in a VM instead.

There are a lot of great things about a VM. One for me is security --
I don't have to leave the Windows instance running, so I feel better
about the security aspect. When I'm not using it, I can just 'suspend'
   it and keep using Linux.

Another is the flexibility. I can install as many different operating
systems as I have disk space for. Curious how the latest version
of CentOS, Fedora, or Vista works? Just install it in a VM. If you
don't like it, you can always delete it.

Probably the best aspect is portability. Your VM is basically one
file on your machine, so anywhere that you copy that file you can
run your VM. If I'm going out of town to visit family, I can copy
the VM to a compact flash card and then copy it to their machine
when I get there. All of my files, drivers, and everything else will
just work because the VM interface standardizes all of that stuff.

I run VMWare Workstation on my Fedora Core 7 laptop. I've been using
Linux since 1991 (version 0.12) and exclusively since 1994 and love it,
and never want to run anything else as my primary operating system.
But I do have Windows applications that I need to run, so VMWare has
proved to be invaluable. With it I can use Photoshop or Scottrade
Elite (a realtime stock application that only runs on Windows). It's
also useful when I want to see how Web pages look on a Windows machine.

Those of you with Macs are probably going to be interested in VMs
too. Now that Macs use Intel-based processors, you can run other
operating systems like Linux or Windows on there too.
