Re: Loropetalum 'Purple Pixie'

Hi, Suzanne!

I got both the Purple Pixie and its bigger cousin, Purple ? (can't recall the second part of that name!) at the GWA meeting about 2 years ago and planted them in my Ct zone 5/6 garden. Neither made it, even when I used the nursery pot cover trick and extra shredded leaf mulch for their winter blankets. I had high hopes 'cause the foliage is so superb.

I had given an extra one to my sister to plant on Long Island where she is zone 6/7 and that did fine, looks great. Maybe if you had a micro climate somewhere south facing, chanted, cast a spell, etc.?

I'd also like to try LORAPETUALUM in my Woodstock, NY garden (zone 5), but
the Amer. Hort. Soc A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants lists it as a plant
for Zones 8-9. Is 'Purple Pixie' more cold hardy?
