Re: plant combo suggestions, please- Columbine solutions
I've always wondered if one of the neem oil products would work since one of
the neem properties is that it acts as a repellent. Another thought is to
remove the foliage just before the miners arrive. This deprives them of a
food source and as a result they won't be able to reproduce on site and reinfect
the plants. But of course when you remove the foliage you've got nada.
I've always had the miners on my columbines in my zone 6 gardens but for
whatever the reason they don't seem to bother my zone 5 plants. Yet.

My columbines (wild and hybrid) are planted near perennials that start
growing later and are much taller. They effectively hide the columbines
once the leaf miners start. One batch is at the top of a berm, so I see
the flowers, but have to climb up there to see the damage.
If somebody has a good, sustainable solution to these little buggers, I'd
sure like to know what it is. I'm not a perfectionist in the garden, so I
view their damage as "natural variegation."
