Columbine combo suggestions

Carlo, you must get around more than I do. Haven't toured Hades yet. :-) But I don't agree -- there's a place for variegation, though it can be overdone.
When I used to plant columbines, if I didn't deadhead them fanatically, after 2 or at most 3 years all I had were muddy magenta/blue flowers no matter what colors I'd planted; the seed didn't come true, and the seedlings were more vigorous than the parents. And deadheading, unfortunately, has always been a "when I get around to it" activity. Is this still true of the varieties available now?

PS: I like Graham's idea.

Yes...but they're ugly as Hades...

 C.L.,
one possible dodge is to grow the variegated-leaf varieties, like Granny's Gold,
Leprechaun Gold, Woodside Gold, or Lime Frost. They get leaf miner too, but it's
harder to see the damage.
