Don't count on it. I have a purple sport of wild columbine that receives
all day, hot baking summer sun. This made it shorter and more prolific
than when it was growing in the shady spot where I originally found it.
It makes zillions of seeds each season and doubles in circumference each
year. My hybrids get 4-5 hours of strong sun also and they grow lustily.
I love columbines, so....
Why not give your husband his own garden corner to grow the plants he
loves?

Lois
