Re: impetus
I believe the impetus for the revised regs is the practice of companies
paying employees to write glowing endorsements on sites such as Amazon. Many
consumers rely on such reviews when researching purchases, so unethical
companies try to stuff the ballot box with 5-star endorsements for crumby
products. Those folks should get slammed with fines for deceptive
advertising, IMHO.
As often happens when bureaucrats get going, regs cast wider nets than the
original impetus would have suggested. And, to be fair, the world has
changed a bit since the last update in 1980, when everyone still watched
only three broadcast tv networks, newspapers were thriving, and the web was
the domain of a few geeks.
