Recommending my agent

Hi everybody,

When I was at GWA I was surprised at how few authors I met had agents.  I'm
sure the discussions about the merits of having an agent vs. not having one
have been covered many times, but I just wanted to share the contact info
for my agent in case anyone is interested.  She is Michelle Tessler, and her

While she certainly does a lot of narrative/literary nonfiction and fiction,
that's not all she does--she's handled some cookbooks, business books, and
other such things.  She's been very helpful to me lately navigating the new
electronic rights contracts I'm being asked to sign, and I'm quite sure she
gets me a better deal on advances--enough to justify her commission, to say
the least.  She's also great about jumping in and playing "the bad cop" when
something's going on with one of my books that I don't like.  I keep the
nice relationship with my editor, and she is the one to lay down the law.
She's also just great to bounce ideas off--because she's in New York,
dealing every day with what editors are buying and not buying, she always
helps me make my book proposals more marketable.

love to hear from more garden writers.
