Amy - I couldn't agree with you more.

I've had more than one fellow writer tell me they don't need an agent and I
simply shake my head and watch them sign contracts based on net not gross,
carry-forward provisions that if the advance on this book doesn't pay out -
the advance is carried forward to the next book, giving away all rights in
perpetuity etc etc.  And I'm not sure the merits of an agent have been
discussed in a very long time - given the state of publishing.

 Jeanne Fredericks has been the person to handle my books and she more than
pays her way with increased advances and steering me through the minefield
that is contract law.  She's also brought me several books that she could
sell if I could write (we did) :-)

An MBA with editorial experience, she handles other non-fiction as well - a
