Mayo, interesting thread.

About shallots. I started mine from shallots from the vegetable market (meant to be used as food) a year and a half ago. They grew well and developed bulbs. Each one grew a long stem bearing a cluster of small bulbils. These bulbils fattened up and then the whole stem fell over. When the bulbils hit the ground some took root and started a smaller long stem. They behaved just like something a friend gave me as a "walking onion." Is that a British or North American synonym for shallot? They are hardy here in 6B and I saw similar plants in Quebec.

The unharvested bulbs in the ground kept on maturing and developed into clusters of plants that now look similar to clumps of green onions. Summer-planted bulbils look just about the same. I am eager to see what they all do next spring.

I have eaten some of them picked as bulbs and others harvested and used as green onions -- all are fine.

I suppose I could have spread a virus this way but so far there is no sign of one.
