Re: [GWL]: Integral Urban House
We have done some work with the Olkowski's lately. They are living in Santa Barbara now. We run
the family bug farm and have a non-profit institute, The Dietrick Institute for Insect Ecology
http://dietrick.org through which we train farmers to build habitat to reduce pest problems. They
helped us with an institute project. They will be happy to hear that their work lives on.
I am building a gray water system (now that it is legal) in my suburban yard to water my raised
beds and will put a bee hive on my garage roof soon (using a loophole in the anti-beekeeping city
ordinance). I was inspired by the Integral Urban House.
Now I field questions from customers that are looking for biological solutions for their pest
problems. Soccer moms are now concerned about what pesticides they use at home and what their
kid's school is using in the classroom and on the landscaping. The school districts of Ventura
and Santa Barbara counties have announced a low risk pesticide (least toxic in Olkowski's
verbiage) policy. LA Unified has an IPM program in place. Ventura County government has announced
it plans to reduce its pesticide use. Farmers that scoffed at our biological approach five years
ago now want to learn farm sustainably.
We can now pull microbes, insects, nematodes, botanicals, and equipment off a virtual shelf and
remedy a good percentage of pest problems. As a biologist I find this very exciting.
Times have changed and are changing more and more rapidly. We owe a lot to the pioneers.
We have a lot of information on our web site.
