Re: [GWL]: Chelsea 2002
I have been to Chelsea twice and it's definitely worth the time and money.
You go around madly taking notes because of all the new plants you're seeing
and the beauty of the exhibits. It will make you feel like a novice (although
I did experience a tiny frisson of joy when I was able to tell the fellow at
the allium exhibit about the Allium tricoccum that Chicago is named after and
discovered that he was totally unfamiliar with the plant).
My most important piece of advice is to be there when it opens--8 a.m. Both
times I didn't get there until 8:30 and there was already a crowd. By noon,
the walkways are so stuffed as to be nearly impassable. If I go again, I
might try to join the Royal Hort. Society first so I can go on Tues. or Wed.,
but I've been told those days are crowded too. The other possibility--which I
haven't tried--is to wait until tea time (i.e., 3:30 or so) because tea is
sacred in England and the place will surely empty out a bit then. I've
certainly seen this when visiting places like Sissinghurst and Tintinhull.
