I wonder if sometimes publishers hope you simply won't remember which
rights you've signed away.  I had a publisher tell me he didn't think he
should have to sign a "replacement-value" memo for photos they already
owned.  I reminded him that they didn't own the photos and in fact had
only purchased first rights.  Surprise.

You're right, don't give in.  I was a beginner and he thought he could
intimidate me.  Instead it just pissed me off.  It's nice to know this
doesn't just happen to newbies..
