I certainly don't consider this topic "off-topic." This list shares almost
weekly the obituaries of various gardening markets. In that light alone, the
increasing consolidation of media control -- read, a shrinking market for our
product -- concerns all writers.
The larger issue is control not of newspapers, but of news. The media do not
exist or function in some altruistic vacuum. Their owners have axes to grind,
and they don't always limit the grinding to the op-ed page.
When more publications are owned by fewer corporations, that bell tolls for
all of us.
