List Co-Owner Rants about Sharing

In the last month, I have posted two items of an informational nature-press
kits and fall bulb symposium notes. The reasons I have done so are that I
strongly feel that the GWL listserv is an information exchange and an
educational tool. That is why Lon and I founded it three years ago.

In the beginning, there were wonderful posts full of tips, information and
resources. However, our dialogue lately seems to have disintegrated into
gossip, me-to's and horticulture trivia. I was hoping to lead by example
with my recent posts. But, subtlety obviously doesn't work.

So...I'm asking you all to post things of value to this list. We have
numerous members with valuable experience. Some know the book industry and
can offer tips on creating queries. Others are accomplished photographers,
and they can explain to neophytes how to take a decent slide that can be
used with an article. In the past, we have had computer gurus give us hints
on how to use software to further our productivity. I could go on, but you
get the picture. I bet 70 percent of this listserv has something to offer
the rest of us. Also, if you attend a seminar or symposium that pertains to
our industry, share your notes. We all can benefit.

We need to share. That's what gardening writing is about-sharing with our
readers, sharing with our peers. Go to a GWA symposium, and you will see
that sharing in action.

If you are afraid that you are giving away secrets that will give others an
edge over you, don't worry. The posts I did contained plenty of facts and
sources that I know will turn up in articles and columns elsewhere. But, I
will sell articles, too, and my press kit will continue to stir interest
among recipients. If you share the basics and a few hints and sources, you
are not giving away your livelihood. You are helping others to spread the
correct information and to create media products that add to whole of garden
information. Who knows, you may be quoted as an expert, which can't hurt
your reputation.

Prepare a post of value and share, please. End of rant.
