Post-Symposium Networking

It has been almost a month since the GWA Symposium in Chicago. While the
Symposium was an action packed adventure full of networking
opportunities it seems to me that there is no reason that it should end
there.

Doreen is right when this list started it was full of tips and
information. No one in Chicago said to me that they would not share tips
or ideas with me for fear of them being stolen.

I belong to several other professional lists including an investigative
reporting list. Information is freely shared there. Most of us are in
different parts of the country. Even if the article is on the same
subject it is unlikely that it will be identical.

One thing I have noticed since I returned is that I am receiving tons of
mail containing great article ideas. I am not afraid to discuss those
ideas with others. This is how we grow.

I for one love working with editors that actually talk to me about ideas
I have and help me to further develop them. Developing article ideas is
my weak spot.

Yes, I have been told after querying that someone on the staff could do
that article. Hey, that's ok. Next time, maybe I will get to write one.

Magazines, newspapers, publishers are all downsizing, but they still
need a variety of writers. Being freelance means rolling with the flow
to me. This month alone I am writing one article on greenhouse
conservation, one on fire magic, one on cats and poisonous plants, one
on Christmas herb meanings, plus numerous investigative articles for the
newspaper I write for. In addition I am working on 5 books.

Sure someone could steal my ideas. Sure they could beat me to writing
the articles. However, I do believe there is a sense of honor among
writers.
