Re: Friendly worms or killer worms???

I'm still confused about this rain garden idea. It sounds to me like a new name for just putting some plants in a low spot in the yard. Carolyn Ulrich

and, what is a rain garden?

It's a garden of plants that can take flood and drought which is planted
where the runoff from concrete surfaces goes or where building gutters
empty. It's usually indented so water can pool. The plants use up the
runoff so it doesn't go into the water table, sewers or streams. Runoff
water often carries pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and other toxins
with it. The rain garden plants are bio-remediators--they tie up the toxins
in their roots and foliage. I have a rain garden that consists of a cluster
of birch, ornamental grasses, coneflowers, rudbeckia, weigela, baptista,
coreopsis and a few other prairie plants. They seem to be the best at
handling both flood and drought.

I agree with Jacqui that sustainable gardening needs to be represented in
GWA. Maybe someone can suggest that it be a workshop at the 2004 symposium,
for a start.
