Jeff buddy - you call *that* a dustup? :-) I have a bit of a collection of old garden books and magazines and compared to those old timers, we're all *quite* civilized by comparison. They didn't hesitate to name names and describe writing and horticultural expertise/opinions in vitriolic prose. Quite delightful to read a mere 100 years later.Jeff Ball wrote -Darn, I take two days off from GWL and I miss one of the best dust ups I think we've had.
In contrast, we are a bunch of kittens - making generalized statements about crappy writing without naming names (check out the gardenweb.com garden writer board - they *are* naming names) ;-) and dusting each other's knowledge off a little bit around the edges. I know you're all going to click over there to see if *your* name pops up on either the good side or the bad side of the reporting. I do recognize a fair number of names there. :-)
I don't know about you folks but my papers pay me to write entertaining prose first - with the hopes of having decent gardening information second. All the best gardening info in the world is so much earnest compost if you don't package it in a way that people want to read. So, if I like it - my readers know this. If I don't like it - they know that too. I'm not educating them - I'm entertaining them. If they learn something (and they often write to tell me they did) so much the better.
Doug
ps. I never met a real gardener with a humble opinion of anything gardening. And I never met a real gardener that wouldn't share anything he had with another real gardener, including his humble opinion. :-)
