	When I started the GWL I just thought of it as setting up a "phone 
line" to allow garden writers to contact each other freely and share 
information.  I figured everyone in such a list would be professionals 
and would have sense enough to use the list properly.  So when some 
people started misusing the list, or being really sloppy,  I tried to 
steer them back on track as gently as possible, which was what I 
thought a moderator should do.  That was my baptism of fire, with 
people complaining about my comments and some leaving the list because 
they couldn't do whatever they wanted.
	Anyway, this last thing has gotten way out of hand.   So far as I 
know, Jeff L.  had NOT tried to post the alleged letter (the PAR 
section of that letter) at any time.  It certainly hasn't come through 
here.  I'd remember a letter that long.  I'm not even sure he was still 
being moderated at that time.  Certainly, his vitriolic letter 
obviously wasn't moderated.
	 And I've been told offlist that people from the GWL who were at the 
GWA meeting were grumbling about my "heavy handed, arbitrary" 
moderation of the list.   The only time I've moderated anyone is when 
they forget and start using the list for personal communications, or 
they are posting something that is totally unrelated to Garden Writing. 
  The irony is that I never expected the list to NEED moderating.
	At the present time, I'm not going to do anything, but I have been 
exploring options.  I do know that with the wealth of good information 
in the archives, I will make sure that material is still available, no 
matter what else is done.
