I have the Canon 300D which is similar to the XT.
I've had no problems with the picture orientation when using Canon's 
own CameraWindow software to download the images to my computer. This 
is the same from the card in a cardreader, or direct from the camera. 

The only items which don't rotate correctly are video snippets taken 
on my Canon Ixus compact. 

As the camera seems to rotate the picture correctly when the card is 
viewed in your camera, it suggests that the correct information has 
been stored alongside the picture. I'm guessing it may be a software 
issue with your download software.
