GW discussion board

Hi Jo Ellen,

I'm so sorry you had trouble registering for the discussion board.  We're up
to 87 members, and I've been approving everybody as quickly as I
can--usually within 24 hours, but no later than 48 hours. If you want to let
me know specifically what isn't working, I can try to help--just email me
directly at amy@amystewart.com. Most people seem to have no problem signing
up.

Reasons for doing this:

1. Lots of talk at GWA about how people want a discussion board.  Not clear
why GWA hasn't set one up--I belong to lots of member organizations that
host discussion boards on their websites, so it's obviously do-able.  I
chose the "fast and free" option, which may have a few downsides, but for
the most part seems to work just fine.  Fast and free seemed better than
nothing at all.

2.  Discussion boards are a familiar format to a lot of people. It has the
advantage of having fixed topics within the board (book publishing,
photography, blogging/websites, speaking/touring, and whatever else we want)
so that people can browse everything that has been posted under that topic
quite easily. It makes it very easy to keep track of threads and follow
discussions.

3.  It's not intended to replace anything that's already out there.  People
will use whatever tools and technology work best for them, and given that so
many people seemed to want a discussion board, I saw no reason not to set
one up. If it's helpful, people will use it, and if it's not helpful, they
won't.  Fine with me either way.
