My friends Eric and Julia Hofley carry an empty suitcase with them  
just for plants.  It's one size larger than their regular bag so they  
nest it, avoiding the extra baggage charge on the outgoing flight. I  
took home only the set of tiny shrubs. I emptied my carry-on, save  
for jewelry, into my checked baggage and filled it with shrubs. All  
the plants arrived home in perfect condition.
