GWA Awards presentations

In response to Betty's comments--I thought GWA did have stickers--if they do
not, they certainly should. AHS does for their awards.

I suspect that there is a way to pay for advertising, in-store placement of
winning books with promotional poster, or other promotion of the awards to
make it a bigger deal, perhaps financied with publisher contributions (for
the book part of the awards, at least--I realize there are other categories
that can be promoted differently).

Or maybe part of the awards budget is being spent on something that doesn't
add as much value, and could be re-assigned to something that adds more
value. Again, I'd look at what Edgar, James Beard, etc do, and find out how
they pay for it. This has all been done before--it's just a question of
looking outside the garden world for better models.

I've never noticed any coverage of Q&T awards in Publishers Weekly, Shelf
Awareness, GalleyCat, Bookselling This Week, Publishers Lunch, or any of the
other publishing trade publications that publishers, agents, and booksellers
read. This wouldn't cost anything but would raise awareness among
publishers and bookstores. Ideally, GWA would have a mailing list that
includes botanical gardens, garden clubs, master gardeners, plant societies,
and other groups that might be interested in hearing about the awards, too.
Connecting us with our readers/viewers is an important part of the
association's job, in my view.

While I'm at it--wouldn't it be fun if our readers could vote for their
favorite garden books/radio shows, etc? Online voting is incredibly easy
and free or nearly free these days. Why not have a "readers choice" option?

Cheers,

Amy
