Re: parking strip gardens in LA and SD areas (and points between)

The only parking strip garden I can think of offhand is the one at
American Jewish University, which is a rabbinical school and
undergraduate school up on Mulholland Drive. They incorporate a LOT of
drought-tolerant grasses by the parking lot, but what really made me
laugh was realizing that they put in a kind of citrus tree called an
etrog, whose fruit has a religious use for Jewish people. They also
have a nice natives and sculpture garden on the other side of their
building.

>From memory, I'd guess the Getty Center, the Skirball Cultural Center
and LACMA might all have interesting parking strips because their
landscaping is generally interesting and drought-tolerant. (The Getty
and the Skirball are near American Jewish Univ., so they might be
worth a quick visit.) Lots of businesses have drought-tolerant
landscaping, but as I've gotten better at identifying California
natives, I've realized that a lot of the drought-tolerant stuff is
from elsewhere.

But your post reminded me of the Islands of LA project, which is this
artsy thing that seeks to make traffic islands into public space. The
website links to a lot of related events that have to do with
gardening on islands or in other public spaces:

The Fallen Fruit project might also be able to point you in the right direction:
http://www.fallenfruit.org/

And to take it away from edibles, the local chapter of the California
Native Plant Society might be able to help:

Hope that helps! You're welcome to ping me for directions or more information.

Thanks,
Lorelei Laird
