Re: membership value

 Dear Molly,

I'm semi-retired, but still enjoy garden-related work/writing at my own
pace.

I've also done a lot of volunteer work over the past decade and am
interested in philanthropic activities. Whenever I start to think about
dropping something from my agenda, I ask myself what the original reason
was that I joined, and how my relationship to that organization has
changed. For example, although it would be wonderful to "get work" via
the GWA, at this point
my motivation is just shmoozing with friends I've made at Regional
meetings, the symposium, or through groups such as this listserv, and
enjoying the garden tours at the symposium.

I swore on a stack of bibles that I would never volunteer to serve on any
GWA committee, but then the Sustainability Task Force was created and I
saw an outlet for my 10+ years of hard-won environmental knowledge. At
this stage of my life, I try not to do anything that I don't enjoy. It
may sound trite, but I think the key is to do those things that hold
meaning for us, regardless of whether that meaning is "big," such as
changing the world, or "small," such as just having fun. When it's no
longer enjoyable, stop. The return on investment is not always financial.

Regards,
Lois
