Been following this thread. A quick tip for those of you who are technically challenged, as am I.  Several months ago my/Jeff's older Mac laptop suddenly died on me and would not re-boot. I live in the boonies and Mac repair is not available. Given it's age I might have pitched it, but called my IT son-in-law. He told me to take out the battery, put it back in and boot the thing up. Bingo!  The same works for PCs. I suspect many a computer has  been needlessly tossed.
