yellow Jackets, wasps

In Alaska, folks put fish heads ten feet away from the picnic table to divert wasps and yellowjackets. Hamburger works, too. These guys are real meat eaters and it is fascinating to watch em.

We love them because they devour aphids from our birch trees and I always advise leaving them alone--- unless they are in a spot that sees unknowing, human traffic such as over an entry door.

Yes, the sprays are awful. If you are gutsy, you can try a hard spray of water to knock the nest apart or some boiling water. Me, I would rather wait for the frost!
