Hydrangea macrophylla '
Trophy'
At a glance:
The Facts:
Tony Owens discovered this sensational double
white-flowering hydrangea in his garden. It's a sport of Hydrangea Libelle
- a beautiful white and one of the most attractive of all
lacecaps.
Trophy's proven to be a vigorous trouble-free plant
whose very large flower heads, and they can get to 20-30 cm in diameter are
ideal for floral work - one flower is enough for many floral
applications.
It flowers early from mid-spring, with a succession
through to late summer, with two distinct flower forms. The first flush
from spring to summer yields flowers that are fully double, and are a soft cream
with a hint of primrose. If grown in the shade, these first flowers have a
lovely creamy green hue.
The flowers begin with the traditional flat
lacecap-like shape becoming rounded as they develop and age. If the soil
is quite acidic, they will also develop a subtle shade of blue.
