Hydrangea macrophylla "Trophy"

Hydrangea macrophylla ' Trophy'

At a glance:
  • An outstanding new Hydrangea.
  • Unique large creamy white flower heads with double individual florets.
  • Flowering from May to September, this wonderful plant add cool colour and a sense of grandeur to the summer garden.
  • Trophy's spectacular flowers bring a distinct point of difference to garden hydrangeas adding another dimension to these easy care and adaptable plants.
The Facts:

Tony Owens discovered this sensational double white-flowering hydrangea in his garden.  It's a sport of Hydrangea Libelle - a beautiful white and one of  the most attractive of all lacecaps.

Trophy's proven to be a vigorous trouble-free plant whose very large flower heads, and they can get to 20-30 cm in diameter are ideal for floral work - one flower is enough for many floral applications.

It flowers early from mid-spring, with a succession through to late summer, with two distinct flower forms.  The first flush from spring to summer yields flowers that are fully double, and are a soft cream with a hint of primrose.  If grown in the shade, these first flowers have a lovely creamy green hue.

The flowers begin with the traditional flat lacecap-like shape becoming rounded as they develop and age.  If the soil is quite acidic, they will also develop a subtle shade of blue.

Using Trophy:

  • Brilliant garden performer for a shaded area.
  • Great cutflower - long stems and up to ten days vase life.
  • Spectacular when dried for flora artwork.
  • Mass planting, low summer - screens.
Growing Trophy:

  • It is a vigorous, lush, easy-to-grow, trouble free plant.
  • Grow in well worked fertile soil.
  • It will handle the sun, but flowers last longest and develop best colour in shade, flower life is shortened in sunny conditions.
  • Feed with a general garden fertilizer late in autumn.
  • Grows to form a slightly upright bush to 1.5m tall and 1 m wide.
  • Prune to half size late in autumn, cutting to just above a pair of nodes, promoting flowers next season and maintaining shape and vigour.
