Dan, I have often seen this effect from too deep hosta plantings, when called on by a customer to see why the plant isn't growing like it should.
I did read that lilies in general, will branch out and reset their crowns higher to accomodate settling in the soil.
I simply cut the bottom crowns off the top one, clean off the connecting root and scrub the buried crowns and replant.Use bleach as standard precaution on bottom crowns.
