RE: Scanner Problem

Thanks to all of you that have given me help.  As usual you are a great group.  This morning I took the scanner back to the store and asked them to prove to me that it would work on their computer.  They didn't like the idea but I told them that if it work for them then I would go home and not bother them again.  Guess what it would not work for them.  They tried two computers.  So I now have a new machine and will try to get it set up as soon as the work day is over.  Sure hope this turns out to be more successful.

Hi Mary,
Do you know if the USB port is using an interrupt as setup in the BIOS?  I don't know about the absolute latest motherboards, but usually, to use USB, one of the available interrupts has to be reserved for the USB ports.  They can be shared (i.e. having more than one device on that same interrupt, but there must be one designated for USB.   Usually you get to the BIOS setup with a DEL or ESC key, then you would go to the Peripherals I/O setup and make sure USB interrupt is set to yet, or similar.  Then when it reboots, it should grab an available interrupt since you are using a Plug-N-Play O/S.

1) Do you have any other USB devices working?  This is important to prove that your USB port is functioning.  If not then, on to #2.
2) In the windows properties on the computer, right click on "My Computer", go to Properties, Device Manager)  Can you see the device listed under Universal Serial Bus Controller?  Does it appear normal or is there an exclamation point?
3) If it appears normal, hightlight your scanner than check the properties just to make sure the system reports that there are no conflicting devices.

I just set up a system for a friend who had added two new parallel devices and kept his three serial devices.  One of the devices was a scanner.  If you can't get the USB working, you may want to consider switching to parallel (if you scanner supports that) but hold off on that for a bit.  If you like you can call me and I will be glad to try some things with you over the phone.  BTW, it took me ten hours to get that other system going.  One of the major troubles was an incompatible hardware card--brand new card but incompatible.   You'd think there would be a law against that... :-)

Give me a call if you need some basic troubleshooting help.  However, there could be problems with the ME software and the latest drivers so you may want to talk to your scanner people directly.  If it took them that long to get the drivers to you, they were probably still writing them when you made your purchase... :-)
