At least you've spied one of yours.  I'm in Zone 8 and like you, planted last year.  Nothing is in evidence down here at all.  I took one member's suggestion and rooted around in the bed, looking for signs of life.
 
No signs were found, and now the bed looks like a truffle hunting pig has been at it.  Mind you, it truly is spring in Conroe, Texas.  So where are they?
