Re: Pond Location--Not a hosta question

Hi Judy,

You certainly can have a pond under a tree, but it will take more work
to keep it healthy. There are basically three things you need to
consider:

1. Roots - Sharp tree roots can puncture a liner, so be careful to
remove any from the hole. It's also a good idea to put a protective
padding under the liner...old carpet is great and you can usually get it
for free from a carpet store.

2. Falling debris - This is going to be the biggest headache. Anything
that is allowed to stay in the water long enough to break down is going
to cause water quality issues. If you plan on keeping koi, I would
seriously reconsider building your pond under a tree. If you just want
a water garden with a few goldfish, then building under a tree is
doable. Probably the best way to keep the majority of crud out of the
pond is to cover it with a leaf net in the spring and fall when the tree
is dropping the most debris. You may have to do some searching to find
a net with small enough holes to keep the seeds out. During the rest of
the year, a long handled dip net or pool skimmer works well to scoop out
any twigs or leaves that fall in.

A yearly draining and clean out probably will be necessary, but if you
install bottom drains you may be able to get away from this.

3. Shade - This can be good or bad...good in that it may reduce
unwanted algae growth and bad in that it will limit you blooming plant
possibilities. Water lilies and lotus are out except as foliage
plants. I've put together a list of aquatic plants that will do well in
the shade on my website:

If this shady spot is the only place you have for a pond, then by all
means go for it! Water adds a completely new dimension to the garden
whether it be the aquatic plants, the fish, the frogs, birds, and other
wildlife that shows up, or the soothing sound of running water...you'll
love it!
