Actually you don't need to add fertilizer to most soils or very little.

Look at an abandoned field, it grows abundantly without greensand, alfalfa
meal, fish emulsion, chicken grit, osmocote, sphagnum (which is worthless)
and god knows what else. Putting organic material on top of the ground will
improve the moisture holding properties and the plants ability to deal with
to much water. As the humus breaks down it will make the nutrients readily
available to the plant.

Plants grown in lightly fertilized soil with organic material applied to
the surface will also be more disease and pest resistant.
