Dying Scapes

Has anyone ever had scapes with developing seed pods turn brown and the pods
fall off before fully ripening?
This is happening for the first time in six years of hybridizing.
Last month we had 80 to upper 90 degree temperatures with .25" of rain.
I watered with a overhead sprinkler as in previous dry times.
Is there an answer to why this is happening?
