Ken, you hit the nail right on the head - I bought the plant at a greenhouse with a sun shade.. The second flush of leaves is coming inright now so I will be able to see how they hold up - however - as you said the sun has dipped in the sky quite a bit already and is not nearly as intense as it was.. Thanks to both you and Bill for the info. Ronnie

The plant does not appear to be doing too badly since the new leaves look fine. >> you can do as bill suggested....or you can wait a year..... i would suggest that you bought a hosta grown in conditions different from that which you planted it in.....in other words it was grown in a shade house or something like that....... all hosta i get in the mail do exactly what you describe because i grow them in a lot of sun...i have no choice......i presume the professional grower is growing them in the shade houses.....i immediately throw them into the light of day and those original leaves melt away like butter the good news is that the second flush of leaves are tolerant of the sun/conditions you put it in and therefore do not burn out.....besides the fact that fall is around the corner and the intensity of the sun is going down..... the even better news is that the hosta will grow faster in more sun.....regardless of the nominal leave loss....you have to grow them roots, and full sun and warm soil is conducive to root growth...... also hosta that are forced with excess fertilizer have a tendency to have giant leaves and roots that are not big enough to support the plant.....2 years down the line the root mass will be bigger allowing the plant to tolerate more sun....... now....that all said regarding hosta in general.....i agree with bill that the yellows have the hardest time in high sun......but the thicker the leaves the more tolerant...... well thats enough for now....ken --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@mallorn.com with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE HOSTA-OPEN
