Answer to #1: We had bought a new house that had no landscaping and lots of trees. My wife saw an ad in the paper that said "Hostas - $5 each. Over 250 varieties". It was a wonderful hosta garden near us where an elderly lady was thinning out her hostas. We left with $75 worth of hostas that day and went back the next day for $80 more. I was hooked after that.
 
Answer to #2: We saw a mature H. 'Love Pat' at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. At that point I realized that there was more to hostas than the green one with the white edge and the wavy one with the white center that I had.
