new expensive hostas

How do you tell if the money is worth it?  I would not mind paying $50 or more
dollars for an unbelievably wonderful hosta that maintains its appearance
throughout the season and maybe has unique coloration.  But I don't want to
pay that much if it is only a new registration and there equally as wonderful
old varieties for much cheaper prices.  How do you find people willing to talk
about these new introductions.  People who have had personal experience with
some of these plants why they feel they are worth the extra dollars.
