Re:

Thanks for B. Blanchette's input. My web guide was to ANY virus and some of the hits on google.com cover both TVR and TMV, as well as other viruses. I hope all of you with suspected virus infections send leaves to Dr. Ben Lockhart, as suggested by BB. I would send them some stuff but I have not detected any such infections here at Hosta Hill.

your question got passed to my email (I am not on any robins or chat
groups-just don't have time) I want to make sure you understand tobacco
mosaic virus (TMV) is quite different from tobacco rattle (TRV) - the names
of viruses can be confusing.  You asked about TMV, the reference George
Schmid gave you was for TRV.  TMV is spread by mechanical transmission -
the virus is very stabile, it can be picked up from cigarettes and passed
to many plants.  It has not been reported on hosta.  I have had TRV (also
called tobravirus) on my hostas, epimediums, heucheras, butterfly bush and
more.  It is spread by a soil nematode and as the reference said has a wide
host range and about all you can is plant resistant plants like ornamental
grasses.  There are several other viruses on hostas - you should have it
confirmed if you suspect a virus.  Only then will you know how it's spread
and what other plants it will infect.  If you have a virus on hostas put a
sample in a plastic bag and mail it to Dr. Ben Lockhart, Dept of Plant
Pathology, University of Minnesota, 495 Borlaug Hall, 1991 Upper Buford
Circle, St. Paul MN 55108  If I can be on any help, let me know. Bonnie
Blanchette
