Re: Size and crosses

Thank you, Mr. Schmid! I have your book on order right now. Should be here in the next few weeks! Larry

Larry,

Pollen size may have something to do with it. Look in my book, page 305. Palynological characteristics sometimes affect breeding.

Thank you, Mr Zonneveld!

I was wondering why that H. plantaginea wasn't used in the majority of breeding lines, to get the large fragrant blooms. Now I see that there is a low fertility outcome, potientially. I would think that additional crosses could isolate the better traits of  H.plantaginea, but this would take time. Again thank you for any pointers that you may provide, for someone like myself, just starting in the hybridation of hostas. I know your time is at a premium! Larry

Size does not matter when making crosses in hosta. All species
cross easily with the exception of H plantaginea that is in a
separate section Of course the ease with wich hybrids can be
crossed strongly depends on their fertility. Especially hybrids with
H plantaginea have mostly a very low fertility. However by repeated
(back)crossing I succeeded in growing a venusta-like plant with
fragrance!
