Re: HOSTA TRIVIAL PURSUIT

Glen,
Regarding item 'D'... I do not know
about total hosta registrations in 1975 but here is some information
from The AHS Bulletin #1, 1969 (now the Journal). It lists the names of
the first 12 hostas that were registered.

Here is a quote by Alex Summers in that first issue.
...... "We are registering the names of hosta cultivars to avoid the
confusion which would arise through the use of duplicate names for
different hostas. At the moment there are probably less than a hundred
hostas that have been named. In the future there will likely be several
hundred and even thousands."

Below are the names of the first 12 registered hostas. The list was
kept then, as now (I think) by the University of Minnesota Landscape
Arboretum. For those new to hostas, Alex Summers was the first
president and one of the founders of the AHS.

'August Moon' - 'Crinkle Cup' - Fall Emerald' - 'Lady Helen' - 'Pale
Gold' - 'Snow Mound' - 'Willy Nilly' - 'Chartreuse' - 'Golden
Anniversary' - 'Golden Plum' - 'Green Platter' - and s. 'Elegans'

What is going to cause 'date' confusion is that the registration
criteria has changed and hostas were re-registered to meet this new
criteria. For example, 'August Moon', an Alex Summers introduction,
has the 'official' registration date shown as 1996 in the Hosta Finder.
This hosta was shown in the 1968 list of original registrations.
Nothing is simple anymore.
