My mind may not work like yours or the next person.  It is easier sometimes
if we know what 1 and 1000 is.  1oz to 1 cup, 1 ml to 1000ml, 1 cup to 1
gallon.  If I am sure of something, or have a mentor I can trust to help me,
it is easier to accomplish the task and if not I would not be able to be
comfortable with the experiment (for lack of a better word).  It is easy to
assume we should all be at the same level of knowledge.
