I don't recall seeing Hilltop @ First Look! Could I have missed a vendor?
(hope not)

Subject: Hosta 'Cathy's Clown'
| Hello Everyone!
|
| I'm sorry I couldn't make it to First Look again this year. I
| understand that some terrific plants took the prizes. Congrats to Dave
| Chopko and Glen Williams.
|
| I understand that one our my plants, 'Cathy's Clown' was being sold at
| First Look by Hilltop Gardens. The plant is small, with dark green
| leaves with a white center. The white center has dark green speckles.
| This plant has not been released by us and is not for sale. We talked
| to Oscar at Hilltop this morning and he tells us that he bought the
| plant at an auction, but unfortunately does not remember any details. He
| has told us that he will certainly stop selling it now that he knows it
| hasn't been released.
|
| Unless someone can explain to me how they received the original plant
| that is being distributed, I can only assume that it was stolen, either
| from me or from the tc lab. I am very unhappy. First of all, as of
| now, there is no 'Cathy's Clown'. The plants that come out of the tc
| lab vary greatly, and we have not selected the plants that will be named
| and sold. We put the name on the plant we sent to the lab, but we
| assumed, and we were correct, that the markings on the tc'd plants would
| vary widely. Only the plants that we select as being true to the
| original should be labeled 'Cathy's Clown' Frankly, most of the plants
| we have received from the lab have narrow and/or distorted marking and
| are worthless. Secondly, we obviously don't think that anyone has a
| right to sell our plants until we put them on the market. I have no
| right to be upset at anyone who does so without knowing my objections,
| so I am officially making my objections known now.
|
| Obviously, I would like to know who has the plant besides Hilltop, but
| as of yet, I haven't been able to find out. If the folks who bought it
| at First Look did so with the intent of selling the plant, I would like
| to discuss the situation with them before they do so. To put it
| bluntly, I do not want this plant on the market until we have culled the
| plants that are not good enough to sell. Most of the plants that we have
| received from the lab do not match the markings on the origianl stock
| plant. It's my plant, and only I have the right to say what is and what
| is not going to be 'Cathy's Clown'. Only the plants that are true to
| the original should be named 'Cathy's Clown' and as of now, neither I
| nor anyone else who has the plant knows if what is being sold has any
| resemblence to the original. . If you have the plant and want to sell
| it, auction it, or give it away, give it a name of your own choosing and
| pretend it's your plant. I do not want my name associated with it.
|
| The plant is neither registered nor patented, so if anyone has the plant
| and insists on calling it as 'Cathy's Clown', I guess there would be
| nothing I could do other than rename my plant and express my displeasure.
|
| Chick
