Re: unhappy hosta

That sounds like a mole to me!
I will have to try night trapping myself.

First time I have used a mouse trap for voles or moles - and it definitely was a mole. feet, nose and lack of eyes gave it away.

And yes, it was out of its runs - probably happened at night, as I discovered it in the morning.

I find it interesting that a mole was trapped with peanut butter.

Moles are meat eaters and eat a diet of bugs and worms.

Voles on the other hand use the moles tunnels to avail themselves of the root and plants that is their diet.

Mary, I put two havahart live rabbit traps to catch my rabbits, but these > Virginia "mountain" rabbits are smarter than the Delaware ones.

I left the empty havaharts open in Delaware and eventually they would go > in with no bait. But not here.

I mousetrapped my first mole (under a pot with peanut butter) - not as > many tunnels now, could it be only one did all the damage?

Bruce, It seems that S&S may also be a favorite of rabbits. I only have
about 5 leaves left from a large clump. I carried off a bushel of leaves
that had been cut but left to die. This is my first real problem with
rabbits. I think I may have to buy a gun.

Voles will eat Sum & Substance first, for what ever reasons. I lost some
large clumps growing in a field this way this year.

Sounds like a root problem or voles which will eat the
crowns and cause the plant appear stunted because you
don't have all the crowns. I would think about a root
problem last summer after you lost interest and didn't
notice, causing the plant to not store enough food for
spring.

This year's growth appears to be halted or stunted.
The pips emerged and
some leaves have unfurled, but remain small. Other
pips are up about 2-3
inches but remain unfurled. The plant has been in
this stage of growth
for at least two weeks if not more. I can't see
anything that looks like
a disease, virus or pest affecting the plant. I am
having a problem with
cutworms this year, but not on this plant."
