Hi all, Urajiro Giboshi is the Japanese name for H. hypoleuca. Page 56, my book. There is a white-backed H. longipes var. latifolia. The small populations of H. rupifraga occurring only on Hachijo Island are not white-backed. See page 91 for my entry of H. rupifraga `Urajiro'. 'Urajiro Hachijo' Chick & Jim..this ain't going to mean much, except to possibly make this question even more mysterious, but I recall seeing and photographing something called H. Rupifraga 'Urajiro' in the Ed Elslager garden, at Ann Arbor Convention bus tour; which had me wondering, if there was a white backed rupifraga?
"urajiro" in the Japanese language refers to "white backing on leaves" does it not; and perhaps, some are making use of Japanese naming/re-naming?..FOR EXAMPLE: One upon a time, a long long time ago, in a land not so far away (right here!) a well known Nursery-person in Canada, sold me a very rare hosta from Japan, charging me $25.00 for a single eye'd-plant called H. 'Suji Giboshi'. By cross-checking in 'The Genus Hosta' book, I saw that this is H. undulata 'Univitata' --- NEAT TRICK!...don't you think? LOL!

Hi Jim.
Haven't seen you in ages! I just went to Florida for a few days. Not my kind of place.
My question was prompted by the listing in the auction of H. ruprifraga 'Urajiro Hachijo'. I wondered if it had been reclassified, or whether it was a different plant than the one you gave me. I grow the species ruprifraga, but if I remember, my ruprifraga is significantly larger than the plant you gave me, so I doubted the listing and assumed it was really a longipes. Then I looked in Georges book and his description of the two species indicate that the leaf size is the same for both. Now I'm totally confused, but I at least come to the conclusion that the correct name for the plant being auctioned is longipes, that it is the same plant you gave me, and there is no fuprifraga 'Urajiro Hachijo'.
At least I think that's what I think.

So now you are back from Florida a want to know about 'H. Urajiro Hachigo'. The plant you got from me was acquired from Japan. It was a collectors' item even there, having become extinct in the wild.. It now exists in gardens only, so I understand. It is not the same as H. rupifraga.
