Narda,  Round-up will kill the suckers only, provided you do only one
sucker at a time.  What I do on my crabapples is cut the tall suckers off
and a month later just spray the baby suckers that have emerged.  That way
less chemical is used that could potential affect the tree.  Round-up is a
plant killer and trees are plants.  So keep the spraying limited to only
once a year and follow the instructions on the label.  

Round-up as you may know, works only on chlorophyll, so don't waste it on
the bark, or ground.  When it is absorbed by the plant it kills the plant
and the roots.  Since the suckers are attached to the tree roots there is
the potential to also kill the tree roots, so again, keep the spraying to
a minimum.
