Hi Kate and wonderful hosta-open list!
RE:>>Remember when the Russians stole our money that we gave them to

their economy? Well, Congress gave the pork to the Soviet Union and
no one
knows where it went.

Some of this stuff never even crosses our radar screens because it
is not "Man bites Dog" news...
Special tax breaks and loop holes get created all of the time... e.g. Do you know why horse breeders can lose money for three of seven years while dog breeders are only allowed three of five (without the operation being ruled a "hobby loss" by the IRS, and therefore not tax deductible)? Because senators and representatives own more horse breeding operations than dog breeding operations (or have constituents who do), so they made sure to extend the provision for that select group of people.
I heard Rush Limbaugh say something today that really irked me. I can usually count on him to say something off-the-wall (that shows how bigotted he has become while still attempting to convince us that he retains objectivity and a modicum of intelligence) most every day. This is as exact as I can recall it, and I wish I had had a pen to write the exact expression down, but this is nearly 100% accurate:
"The liberals despise us for living and detest even the air that we breathe".
I want every conservative on this list to know that, none of the "liberals" I know could possibly be the kind that Rush is referring to with this statement. I am as far away from believing this kind of moronic statement as I am from wanting to dig up and throw away my Hosta collection. I believe I can state something that liberals DO believe, however, by offering this quotation:
"They came for the Communists, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a
Communist;
They came for the Socialists, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a
Socialist;
They came for the labor leaders, and I didn't object - For I wasn't
a labor leader;
They came for the Jews, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Jew;
Then they came for me and there was no one left to object". Pastor
Martin Niemöller
Other paraphrases of this famous quotation are available at http://serendipity.magnet.ch/cda/niemoll.html -- again, only a resource page that I found with a search engine, but I saw the quotation today in the book store and I thought it appropo to our discussion. I copied down the author's name, did the search, and voila, the exact quotation...
Isn't the Internet awesome?
