RE: Virus in hosta


Hi Mike,  Dutch Elm Disease is a virus that is spread by the Elm Leaf
Beetle.  Since the beetle only eats elm leaves and not hosta leaves, I
don't think you have to worry.  I'm told that the sawdust is not
considered a carrier of the virus.  

The sap on the other had is where the virus is located.  It functions by
blocking the phloem vessels on the youngest branches causing the leaves to
die from the lack of water.  While trees and hostas do have some similiar
characteristics in the leaves, they do not transport fluids in the same
manner, so it is very unlikely that your hostas would be infected.  Unless
there was a mutation of some sort .....
