Alex uses bud cutting almost exclusively to isolate sporting leaves that
appear in hostas.
Sometimes he will take some bud cuttings of a new plant he has to trade with
a friend for a bud or small cutting of a new or interesting plant.
I doubt using bud cutting to propagate has any advantages over propagating
by division as Chick advocates.
In my opinion bud cutting is most useful for isolating sporting leaves on a
single division hosta.
