Subject: The future of Maelstrom

   Hello IGSRobin members,

The future of the Maelstrom service provided by St John's University has
been under discussion for some time. The relevance of the service or the
content of much of the exchanges within the many mailing lists had be
questioned in it's relevance to Catholics. However the point that
probably
had most bearing was that nearly all Universities have withdrawn this
sort
of service and St John's has been generous to continue so long!

A decision has now been made about whether or not to continue and the
following was recently posted in the relevant place,

So we have to discuss what we should do and to do it.

I will take it as read that we all wish the IGS Robin to continue as
an email discussion group. So where should we "migrate" to? Some
of the many Maelstrom List owners are getting together to set up
an alternative from scratch. This is still under discussion and
construction, with finance still to be sorted out, but the basic aim is
to provide a service for health and disability lists, and not aimed
at hobbyists like us! Even if we were accepted it is expected that
there will be a charge, each year

In the past when I have suggested a transfer to Onelist/Yahoo those
few that responded were not in favour, but it must now be an option,
not least because it is so easy to set up.

If any members have any knowledge or experience of other services
that would provide the same standard as Maelstrom, please let us
know.

Please do post your views to the group so we all get to know what
the general feelings are.
